INNOVA announced today that it is partnering with Discraft
to provide discs for the 2013 USAU Club Championship Series. The announcement caught Discraft officials
off-guard, who were apparently completely unaware of any such arrangement.
“We at INNOVA are truly excited about this partnership, and are
optimistic about what it means for our company’s future in the sport of
ultimate,” said INNOVA spokesman Orlando Flores at an early-morning press
conference in Ontario, CA.
What exactly that partnership might mean is still
unclear. When pressed to explain
further, Flores referred reporters to his colleagues at Discraft.
“Like the rest of the ultimate world, Discraft learned
about the alleged partnership when INNOVA announced it early this morning,”
said Discraft spokeswoman Erica Chambers in a prepared statement.
“We want to assure our loyal customers that the Discraft
Ultra-Star will remain the official disc of competition for the Club Series,
and that Discraft will continue its exclusive manufacturing of ultimate’s
premier disc.”
“At this point, we can neither confirm nor deny the
existence of a partnership between our corporations,” continued Chambers. “Nor are we prepared at this time to
speculate on the implications of such a partnership, should one exist. We will
have further comment pending the results of a full investigation.”
Representatives of USA Ultimate promised to weigh in, but
regretted that for legal reasons they were forced to use snail mail. Their preliminary response will be processed within
a week to ten days, at which time they will have the opportunity to review it for errors before final submission.
